THE DANDELION - STRANGE CASE OF THE DANDELION

It's been too long since the last post and after a little facelift to the site and some time on the web I stumbled upon The Dandelion. The Dandelion, which may be the work of an individual musician, just released  'Strange Case of The Dandelion' a couple months ago. So right off the bat I think we can all see where this could be going - flower floating rhythms and fuzz'd vibes. To be honest, the intro to the opening track nearly had me going 'NEXT' (I'm not a fan of flute though I feel how a flute could add to make a rounded psychedelic sound) but I am glad I didn't. A few measures in when the song gets going it creates a layered nostalgia with simple bass and fuzz guitar lines on top of the unplugged sounds of acoustic guitar and flute. The songs moves on to live up to it's bandcamp tag 'paisley,' with hypnotic rhythms and ghostly vocals that fit together as timeless psychedelic puzzle pieces.

After paying more attention, turns out this six track bandcamp release is only a sample of a larger thirteen track album. I thought The Dandelion presented itself well through those six songs and there is no way one could go wrong with playing this album the next time a whole bunch of his/her quarter life hip kids came over to smoke cigarettes, snap phone photos (maybe one person will be cool enough to bring out a 35mm camera), drink, and do drugs. So, for five dollars and a few days patience, you could be prepared for that night - probably even before next weekend. Add 'Strange Case of The Dandelion' to your albums or at least dissect it for a mixtape.

MEGACHURCH

Megachurch, is a three piece (two bass...something I have always wanted to do) outfit from Cleveland, Ohio. Right now, these dudes have three albums out - two of which are excellent examples of the satirical and awesome approach to music Megachurch has. If you are reading this before you listen, then let me tell you what these guys are about. Of course, with two bass players one can assume that it's going to be heavy, sludgey, and full of foot stompin breakdowns. Though, these boys don't sing - instead they cut, paste, speed up, slow down, and sample sermons from this nation's greates mega-churches (living in Colorado Springs, a town with one of the most famous mega-churches, I understand the irony witty approach and message the band is sending across). Each song, dripping with the sermon's of god's soldiers, is eerie, creepy, and as a live performance is tight knit - it would sure be a shit show if they were loose and sloppy; it just wouldn't match up with the word of god spewing at their audience. HIGH ARCTIC - MAN HAIR

With some howls and screeches, High Arctic makes there way to the blog. This three, sometimes four, piece from Canada slings around some psychedelic, artsy, chunky, slow, and heavy tracks. Their latest release, Man Hair, is pretty damn gnarly. The first handful of tracks are like a heavy rockabilly version of Kinski - a bit jammy with some stoner vocals - that might remind you of Isaac Brock - matched with wild noisy fuzz'd out guitar work (Our front-man, much like the lead for BLEACHEDBLONDE seems to be the bands noise machine; a great role in any band), and the occasional math-rock breakdown. The second half of the Man Hair falls a bit more into the ambient/noisy/experimental realm, has a cameo by an un-named clarinet, and ends with some droning acoustic work that will probably put you into some sort of trance, making you forget you were listening to music at all. They have a myspace, a facebook, a live video, and of course a bandcamp. Check them out on your favorite social network, look for them at an art space near you, and download their music....that's right...FOR FREE!

ROYAL TALONS - S/T

Drink a bottle of cough syrup and light up before giving this one a listen. Royal Talons, a three piece from Denver Colorado, pour out thick and slimey doom and gloom that makes Seattle look like Arizona. So wear all of the black clothes you own, sit on your couch, close your eyes, and fly away. These gentleman just played with BLEACHEDBLONDE, The Conjugal Visits, and Knife Fight last Sunday and was it ever awesome. As these boys began their set, the tiny, dirty, glass shard abundant Cafe Carioca became packed with handfuls upon handfuls of Denver's finest boys and girls dry heaving in super slow motion or trying to give themselves head; in case you didn't know, that is a good thing and a compliment. Royal Talons are also on a Colorado comp-This Ain't No Cowtown-with all sorts of other musicians. You can check out that June 30th at Lost Lake. Because the bastards put their shit up all funky on bandcamp (probably due to the incredible length of each song), DIE POP has done you the pleasure of compiling them together and creating a nice little demo for you all to enjoy. The first track, the Scroll, begins with some flange'd out guitar, but do not put this one in the discard pile because at about the 2 minute mark life is given to the lonely guitar and it is accompanied by the other members. Then before you know it, you are stuck in an eight minute exploration of a fuzzy and heavy bass driven atmosphere. The second track (also the track featured on the comp), Robot Cities, will ring your ears for a solid nine minutes and it has some gnarly guitar work that begins 'round 4:45. Shark Skull, the next track, is an all around stellar representation of what May 21st might (more like might not) bring to the table; a sky melting earth shaking torrential apocalypse. The last two tracks, D-Day Spell and Western Path, continue the band's life-long-testimonial-style songs and put a larger emphasis on some poetic shouts of pain and loathing.
