BAD INDIANS - ARE ON THE OTHER SIDE LP

Welcome back. it has been a year, but we are not dead around here. To get things going, let's give a listen to BAD INDIANS. This is the third time BAD INDIANS has seen these pages and if your band consistently released good music then you would be here three times, too.

This four-piece from Michigan are putting out a new LP, yes vinyl, titled Are on the Other Side. It's just in time for your last purchase before 'The End of the World.' There are probably a dozen bands looking to cash in on this fantastic release date, but let's ignore them - right now they do not matter. This gang just shared a stage with Moon Duo two months ago. They must be doing something right.

BAD INDIANS are sticking around. Consistency is key key key to keeping fans - to being any sort of artist. Find what you do and do it well. Chiming in on yester-year's grooving sound, BAD INDIANS have found what they do and they are doing it well. Although the full release is not available for listening, the band put up a four song cock-tease. Probably at the request of CQ Records - it seems as though they hold the digital and maybe physical rights to this album. Oh, forgot to mention they are releasing on CQ Records - a nice little independent label in Austin, Texas. In this sneak peek of the upcoming psych garage album we start with Love and a Shovel. It's a familiar sound if you are familiar with BAD INDIANS. The drums are simple and sweet, the vocals a perfect amount whining treble and shake, the guitar tone as shaking and surfing as the vocals - also with nicely placed slick finger licks.  The song is pretty short so there is no fucking around. It's all the meat with the fat trimmed off. Wherever this song is on the album, it will surely fit as a solid 60s influenced (up to interpretation) rock and roll jam. To be completely honest, and that is in the job description (someone pay me), the second song on the preview doesn't get my gears greased. It seems a bit out of place in the four songs - it's a grunge-pop tune with prominent keys. It is also a short one and fortunate for some listeners. This song seems to say 'hi' instead of 'hey.' (Personal taste gets thrown in from time to time.) The third song, Darkside, is a gem without a doubt. It's a slow down ballad sort of beauty. During a live set we could see this in the middle or towards the end when the band's energy banks have been deposited on fans' faces in previous songs. The recorded version as a prediction, is a bit more enthusiastic, attentive, and full than one could imagine the sweat drenched live version is. And then the fourth track puts a nice little cap on things as it is an amalgamation of songs one and two, making it a nice round, maybe oval, preview of a nice janky record you can add to your collection three weeks from now.

Who knows how much of pre-album or album sales actually goes to BAD INDIANS but BUY THE RECORD and fork over a couple greenbacks for the 'name your price' preview. You're supporting someone who's working hard.

PS Word through the grapevine is that DIE POP is developing a new look. Check back later. It's sure to be a breath of fresh air for 2013.

THE FAULTS - THE FAULTS EP

It's definitely been a few seconds since a post, and despite all the handful of great tunes waiting in the inbox, here is The Faults. A two piece from Sydney (not to be confused with The Faults of the UK), these gents melt low-end fuzz'd out groobin' guitar riffs with abrasive vocals and drums to create a lovely heavily 60s blues/garage influenced sound. Since this is your second stop after *cough* pitchfork *cough* let's say they these guys are like The Black Keys (they have a few new songs out) except, uh, better! No traditional boring sultry blues lyrics or presentation here - it's got a hell of a lot more character. And you won't find any fuzz, delay, or reverb on this front man's pipes either! The EP starts of with a great tune (that some of you saw on their digital single release Quarter/Lucy) Quarter. It does nothing shy of show off their ability to get body parts shaking and twistin'. It's not a bad way to start off. Their second tune, Little Brother, slows down a bit from the previous, and strikes a little harder at some heart strings; punching at your soul. The chord progression may be a bit on the...generic side, but when it comes to ripping out some heavy blues, it's not a surprise to find some recycled material here and there. The third track, Lucy (from the digital single), brings the audience in again for a rockin' tempo with a fantastic nostalgic garage feel. The last track, much like the second, slows things down a bit. Though, unlike the second track it picks up momentarily for a bit of lyrical/emotional disarray...and fades out at 4+ minutes. All in all, this one should be a new EP in your collection, and guess what! It's FREE! So it can be a new one in your collection! Find yourself in Sydney...go watch 'em perform! Otherwise, feel free to give these hard working men a few of YOUR hard earn dollars. GET IT!

PUBLIC DIMS - VENT SOMEWHERE ELSE

Public Dims, a male 'n' female duo in crime from San Juan Capistrano, have a great psychedelic/western twang and swing about themselves and recently played with White Mystery (who I know you read about just the other while ago) at one of your favourite record stores. Their simple rhythms, both drum and treble'd guitar, along with lazy woe-some vocals make for some catchy garage rock. Call it surfy, call it bluesy, call it country, call it what you will - this EP captures an essence of rock and roll...though some of you will be looking for that important driving low end; the last piece to make a power trio. If you need a super catchy tune to get you started, check out their fan-favourite, Lorimer - but stay away from Head Cold Letters - it unfortunately distracts from the gut wrenching melancholy psychedelia through out the rest of this release. But you should definitely take a listen to the entire album. It's not gonna hurt to take less than half an hour out of your day. These cats are working on a new tape out and an October tour, hopefully somewhere near you. If not, then watch the music video, download this one for FREE, and when that tape surfaces BUY IT.

WHITE MYSTERY - BLOOD AND VENOM

Here's some more garage/blues for ya! WHITE MYSTERY is a rockin' brother/sister duo from Chicago, Illinois - home of Bozo the Clown. They put out a mean and nasty full sound, despite their lack of any bass rhythm. This release, Blood and Venom (04/20/2011), is their second go and you can see why they were voted The Best New Band in Illinois by the Boston Phoenix. They're heavy, noisy, loud, and have a cassette (through Burger) release show tomorrow at Burger Records! If you are in the area, go and buy the cassette or their LP. If you aren't in the area, then you can surely click a few buttons here and there and make a cassette or LP appear at your door in just a few days. Check 'em out.

THE DEMON BEAT

PART ONE : The Demon Beat, a three piece band from West Virginia, have been steadily putting out tunes since oh seven and have kept it consistently produced. Their sound - a breed of raw blues, rock, and stoner jam session -  seems to be progressively been leaning towards the indie side of the spectrum; the genre, not the DIY definition that leaves it's artists feeling stronger and more able'd because of their disassociation with the corporate music industry. So, here are some of their earlier more heart-felt and hungry tunes on their selt-titled EP (their second release). The opening track Bad Man is heavily blues influenced and will get a toe or two tappin'...in fact the entire album's feel is established through the first track - you'll get some slower portions in which their front man laments about women and various problems that were established as general musician problems during the emergence of blues and roots music. Then you'll get some Stevie Ray Vaughan - esque riffs thrown here and there along with some cooler riffs that don't make you feel like you are watching a cover band at a bar full o' douchebags. Take a listen to this EP and get it for FREE/name your price!

PART TWO: The Demon Beat, as described above, put out a split release with Caustic Eye Productions and Bud Carroll & The Southern Souls and it is believed that you may find this set of recordings (November 2009) to be better than the self-titled EP above. These songs can be found on their release 'Shit, We're 23' (we all know how much that really does suck) and you may find this release to be a bit more rockin' and raw - though still blues influenced. Download their two tracks from their split for FREEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! And you can buy the album these tracks are featured on at their bandcamp.

FUN GUNS - LEMON DEMOS

Fun Guns is a three piece from Las Angeles, CA. They just self-released a 4-track EP demo (nothing as good as the DIY effort) and it's pretty slammin'. The first track, 'Swiftly, Idiot,' has a nice lazy surfin' blues feel with a familiar progression that you may or may not recognize from here or there. The next two tunes swing and groove with some classy 60s garage influence, but to be honest...song four - 'Calligraphy' - just might be a waste of 1:44 of listening experience; maybe it just doesn't belong on this release (four songs is A-OK) - you be the judge. These guys finish pretty strong with an oooo-ing and ahhhh-ing four chord slow jam. Also, as many of the artists featured here, Fun Guns has been gracious enough to let us have there blood, sweat, and tears for FREE. DOWNLOAD IT.

(LOOK! Some cute black kids with fancy fun confetti guns!)

DEAD CITY

Dead City, a two piece from Brazil, rock and roll. They combine some western swingin' guitar and big beatin' backbone drummin' in some slammin' bluesy moaning garage rock tunes. If you ever had yo' baby left ya, then listen listen listen. Their first track, Derelicts, seeps 'dusty roads drifting from barn party to barn party crackin' rednecks in the head with a baseball bat' from it's pores. Dead City follow that track up with a short haunting rabble rousing highway cruiser that, at the very least, makes your toes tap. And if you think those two tracks are soething special, then the last two songs will blow your mind, actually, listen to those two songs first, actually, who cares what order you listen to them in. If you got some garage rockin' blues, Dead City will ache your pains. FREE DOWNLOAD - GET IT.

MOUNTAIN CULT

A SHORT DEMO AND A SHORT BLURB

Mountain Cult, from Brooklyn NY, mixes the pleasurable sounds of blues, grunge, and trash to give you their current two-song demo that includes 'medical waste' and 'overachiever.' They play a bit slow and lazy-like; at certain points it makes you wonder whether or not these kids can play instruments (but of course they can!) Though there are only two tracks for your auditory pleasure, it is certain that the direction they are going is good enough to keep some of you sticking around and waiting for the next release.

UPDATE: It's a pain when bands change their demo songs when you already talked about them. They now have 4 songs for your listening pleasure.

UPDATE II: There is now a 5th song. Check it out.

SON CATS - O'DELL / 1971 7''

The coasts have been pounding out more than stellar rock and roll for years, and will for years to come. And from both our coasts, and so many other places, come SON CATS. A two (sometimes three) piece from nearly every time zone in the US, Alex and Jasmine put all of the 'ooooooo's in groovy. These cats (no pun intended) put out thick rock and roll waves that drown your brain in a hazy maple flavored smoke.  The two tracks on this 7'', O'Dell and 1971, are packed with truck loads of pure energy. Without any post-production sort of static-magic, these two fill up a lot of  dead air with primitive skin-pounds, wailing guitar riffs, and genuine vocals. Combining folk, 60s psychedelic garage, and pure rock and roll - SON CATS piss excellence. Buy their 7'' from For Arbors / For Satellites or from their bandcamp, then check out the neat little animation/music video for O'Dell.

OLD MAN AND GIRL - EMPTY HOUSE EP

Let us dive a bit beeper this time around and get some minimalistic-old timey-garage rock-blues to your ears. Old Man and Girl, probably a two-piece and possibly consisting of a dude and a chick, come from Ohio. Which city? Probably a small underdeveloped rural area, music like this isn't going to leak from a big sophisticated metropolis. OMG (for short...ha) blend some tube driven-spring reverb-ed delta-style blues with easy 4/4 beats that rest inside a nice translucent frame made of sustained vocal delay. Though, 'EMPTY HOUSE EP' (the only thing on the web from OMG and the second 'Empty House EP' to be released by a band in 2011) rings in with an eight minute blues influenced noise jam, the EP is not limited to one fantastic track, the entire thing is garage/psych diamond. Not only is there noise, but it's good noise; really good noise. Reminiscent of late 60s and early 70s 'satan music' (damn Christians), throwback music-connoisseurs will find these 3 recordings easing analog pains deep in their hearts. Cross your fingers for some more developments from this band....like a full length, or a MySpace, or a facebook, or an e.mail address, or something.
