BAD INDIANS - ARE ON THE OTHER SIDE LP

Welcome back. it has been a year, but we are not dead around here. To get things going, let's give a listen to BAD INDIANS. This is the third time BAD INDIANS has seen these pages and if your band consistently released good music then you would be here three times, too.

This four-piece from Michigan are putting out a new LP, yes vinyl, titled Are on the Other Side. It's just in time for your last purchase before 'The End of the World.' There are probably a dozen bands looking to cash in on this fantastic release date, but let's ignore them - right now they do not matter. This gang just shared a stage with Moon Duo two months ago. They must be doing something right.

BAD INDIANS are sticking around. Consistency is key key key to keeping fans - to being any sort of artist. Find what you do and do it well. Chiming in on yester-year's grooving sound, BAD INDIANS have found what they do and they are doing it well. Although the full release is not available for listening, the band put up a four song cock-tease. Probably at the request of CQ Records - it seems as though they hold the digital and maybe physical rights to this album. Oh, forgot to mention they are releasing on CQ Records - a nice little independent label in Austin, Texas. In this sneak peek of the upcoming psych garage album we start with Love and a Shovel. It's a familiar sound if you are familiar with BAD INDIANS. The drums are simple and sweet, the vocals a perfect amount whining treble and shake, the guitar tone as shaking and surfing as the vocals - also with nicely placed slick finger licks.  The song is pretty short so there is no fucking around. It's all the meat with the fat trimmed off. Wherever this song is on the album, it will surely fit as a solid 60s influenced (up to interpretation) rock and roll jam. To be completely honest, and that is in the job description (someone pay me), the second song on the preview doesn't get my gears greased. It seems a bit out of place in the four songs - it's a grunge-pop tune with prominent keys. It is also a short one and fortunate for some listeners. This song seems to say 'hi' instead of 'hey.' (Personal taste gets thrown in from time to time.) The third song, Darkside, is a gem without a doubt. It's a slow down ballad sort of beauty. During a live set we could see this in the middle or towards the end when the band's energy banks have been deposited on fans' faces in previous songs. The recorded version as a prediction, is a bit more enthusiastic, attentive, and full than one could imagine the sweat drenched live version is. And then the fourth track puts a nice little cap on things as it is an amalgamation of songs one and two, making it a nice round, maybe oval, preview of a nice janky record you can add to your collection three weeks from now.

Who knows how much of pre-album or album sales actually goes to BAD INDIANS but BUY THE RECORD and fork over a couple greenbacks for the 'name your price' preview. You're supporting someone who's working hard.

PS Word through the grapevine is that DIE POP is developing a new look. Check back later. It's sure to be a breath of fresh air for 2013.

THE SPYRALS - SUNFLOWER MICROPHONE 7''

The Spyrals are a talented garage/psych three piece from San Fransisco, California. As of tomorrow, November the 22nd, you will all be able to purchase their latest 7'' - Sunflower Microphone. The first track, also the title track, captures a great spirit of psychedelia and transports the audience to a trip on a desert wasteland, searching for any sign of life while kaleidoscope visions of the sky cause confusion and wonderment. It's damn easy to find yourself rolling your shoulders and hips to this surf influenced tune. The song is a great treat, and if you like it then please check out Night Beats or Bad Indians. The second song on this newly released 7'' is titled Long Road Out - it's damn easy to find yourself rolling your shoulders and hips to this five minute twangy and punchy story. Some may find it a bit jammy , though after a quick puff puff pass and the extended guitar lead turns into a small journey on a river made of goldfish, all reflecting the rays of the sun. If 60s inspired rock/psychedelic with a twist of surfin' blues is your thing, spend a mere six bucks and get this 7''. The first 100 copies are on yellow vinyl. Open your ears!

PUBLIC DIMS - VENT SOMEWHERE ELSE

Public Dims, a male 'n' female duo in crime from San Juan Capistrano, have a great psychedelic/western twang and swing about themselves and recently played with White Mystery (who I know you read about just the other while ago) at one of your favourite record stores. Their simple rhythms, both drum and treble'd guitar, along with lazy woe-some vocals make for some catchy garage rock. Call it surfy, call it bluesy, call it country, call it what you will - this EP captures an essence of rock and roll...though some of you will be looking for that important driving low end; the last piece to make a power trio. If you need a super catchy tune to get you started, check out their fan-favourite, Lorimer - but stay away from Head Cold Letters - it unfortunately distracts from the gut wrenching melancholy psychedelia through out the rest of this release. But you should definitely take a listen to the entire album. It's not gonna hurt to take less than half an hour out of your day. These cats are working on a new tape out and an October tour, hopefully somewhere near you. If not, then watch the music video, download this one for FREE, and when that tape surfaces BUY IT.

NOHOPEKIDS - NOHOPEKIDS EP

Just found NOHOPEKIDS through...let's say a mutual musical taste. These three gentlemen, from Hungary, have brought some gnarly noisy surfin' 'tude to the wonderful world of the internet. Releasing bits and pieces since December 2010 through DIY bedroom recordings, they now have an EP - NOHOPEKIDS EP- and a nice collection for your listening pleasure. This release begins with a nice lil' diddy Lone Surfer pt. 1. It's an instrumental track and if you're paying any attention you'll notice this band is two guitars and a drummer - no bass. Track number two, Fuzzin' Around, also brings you into a great fuzz'd out surf daze. With their two guitar style, and heavy reverb/strong snare drumming, it's easy to see some J&MC or Woven Bones influence. The two tracks following are real nice foot stompers that'll get those toes a movin'. Did we forget to mention that these cats are also singing in english? Track number 5, Coward Cowboy ft Piresian Beach, has got to be the crowd favourite - it's a groovy early blues garage psychedelic tune that slows down the EP right in the middle...just so they can pick it back up with a distorted riff heavy instrumental that has a killer title - Fuzzocalypse vs. Mechagodzilla. And as planned?, the album does a bit of a switch-eroo and the mood follows in reverse and the EP ends with Lone Surfer pt 2. It's great to see the garage spirit alive and still panning across the world - we've seen in in Central and South America, and  the UK...now Hungary! Follow that link down there on the bottom of the post and download this brilliant garage/party punk/surf album for FREE!

After, this little write up was posted, we were informed that NOHOPEKIDS is just one kids doin' some sweet garage. And that picture down there is not band mates, but just good buds. In any case, enjoy the tunes!

BABES ON THE BEACH - BABES ON THE BEACH

Despite how the whole beach party theme is DEAD, there are a number of beach bands still makin' tunes. This band, BABES ON THE BEACH, howber, is better than your beach band. BABES ON THE BEACH, a retired four piece from Canada (Is it true that the Canadian scene is better than ours? Yes, it is true.) whip out some groobing sing-a-long surf influenced punk/rock that will sure remind you of some of the work your local punk band does, or a little bit of what the Black Lips or No Bunny does...or rather, a lot of the stuff put out by the stellar Burger Records. So, for some rad blues/surf/party punk download this s/t? release by BABES ON THE BEACH. And if the beach thing is just too dead for you, then pretend you are being ironic, you dick! DOWNLOAD IT FO' FREE!!!!!!!!!!

RAYON MOON - RAYON MOON I

Rayon Moon, a four piece from Melbourne, Australia, just put out this release earlier this month. To create their DIY version of post-contemporary rock and roll, these fellas (Marc, Jordan, Ben, Gene) recorded the album here and there - garages and living rooms - and mixed the stylings of a number of rockin' infulences (The Stooges, Talking Heads, The 13th Floor Elevators..etc etc) to create an excellent weirdo-punk/surf/garage sound. Rayon Moon has some slick surf licks and toe-shaking beats covered with prominent I-don't-give-a-shit-this-is-rock-and-roll vocals. AAAAAAnnnnnd, with the title Rayon Moon I there is bond to be a Rayon Moon II. Oh, and here's another great thing about this band; THEIR MUSIC IS FREE! GET IT!

Check out that ass grabbin' and strippin'. DIE POP is gettin' a little soft-core.

CATHOLIC SPRAY

Here's one you may have seen on a blog near you and here it is again. Catholic Spray, a four piece, from Paris France have got a great garage sound. At moments you may find that the reverb and delay on the vocals is a smidge too thick , but they have a consistent sound. Their guitar work, simple rhythms, and ooooohs 'n' aaaaaaaaaaahs show heavy influence from classic surf/trash/weirdo punk artists, as well as some contemporary favourites like Ty Segall. If you could understand what was being sang, you'd probably sing along, so instead just move your mouth and pretend like you listened to them before they existed. And for you true collectors, you can find their split cassette with Zyklon Beach at 7inchalla. It's suggested you buy it, but if you are cheap...or poor for that matter, then get their side of the split for FREE! Catholic Spray also has a handful of music videos hangin' around the web, and you should find them, then watch them and listen to them and love them and tell you friends about them and go to a show to see them.

LUAU - SURF ACT

Here's a short one for a short-er demo - found this little gem on JUNGLE ROT. This girl-boy duo creep out of a little town called Moscow, Russia. Anton (sticks and skins) and Nastya (strings) put together some mean tube-driven, reverberated, riffy surf-itude. No, the songs do not have any lyrics, but does that really matter? Not when you have some stellar tunes that get your foot, legs, hips, and arms movin'. Get this 'lo-fi demo' for FREEEEEEEEEEE and GET PITTED (hahahahahahahaha)...because that's what surf is for.

BLANCHE DEVEREAUX - SIAMESE TWINS

Blanche Devereaux is another band without any contact information. Besides that they share a name with at least two other bands and a character from Golden Girls, not much is available. They are Dan Kurc and Greg Pothier. It's pretty apparent that these boys like some loud lo-fi tunes - their music reflects their taste. The first two tracks on their FREE release Siamese Twins (gotta love free, it's sooooo good) are perfect four minutes and 57 seconds. However, the third track Never Want to Know is a bit mediocre. Its reminiscent of Adam Sandler doing his crybaby-my-girl-dumped-me song in that one movie of his where he tries to get a girl and then does - the song is a little on the sappy cliche doo-wop side of the spectrum. Though, the band happens to sandwich this 'skip' between four great tracks, so we'll forgive them this time around. Siamese Twins has definitely clinched their spot as the last entry of the month. And as a little bonus for you, here is twenty five seconds of Blanche Devereaux!

PAPER - ENDLESS SUMMER

paper(the moniker of Ryan Robert Jacobs), is a from the glamorous and dehumanizing LA. Like so many other bands, paper put out a release on January 1st of this year, probably wishing to jump on some sort of second decade rock and roll era...at this moment they have managed to leak their music everywhere and have managed to get a write up or two here and there. Though the promise of instant fame and stardom with a New Year release has yet to set in for these gents, they did produce a nice sounding release. 'Endless Summer,' the ADHD influenced album, starts with a killer introductory track, revealing the short lo-fi crunch and reverb drowned sound that will accompany the rest of 'Endless Summer.' After continuing to listen to the remaining 12 minutes and 7 tracks(two of which were covers), it was decided that the band's merit will need to rest in their ability to create catchy noise/surf/blues/garage tunes for the sake of. The 'band' also put out a little avant-garde release in OCT 2010 titled 'pilot.' This release is a collection of music that was created by Mr. Jacobs All in all, paper is most definitely worth checking out. You can't talk shit about them if you never listened to them, so here is another FREE anthem for a 13 and 1/2 minute journey.

THE SUNBURNS - DO AMERICA EP

The 'Do America EP' (No, not like Bevis and Butthead, but just as cool) by The Sunburns, Johhny-Brent-Dillion-Douglas from the ooo ahhhh and eyyyy Michigan, is a solid piece of rock and roll. The band opens up with a rockin' surf song titled 'I Went to Jail' and follow with a familiar-esque melodramatic-like greaser staple that makes you feel nostalgic for no good reason at all, except that you can. The band then ends with a magical horror piece that is sure to get you lusting for those around you. Mixing a rockabilly sense of a true art/50s sock-hop(rock and roll) with a comparatively-pure style of surf, The Sunburns ooze a nice little post punk surf sound that is sure to get a toe, foot, or body tapping. ...Then, the MySpace was found, and how 'bout that, the band classifies their genre as garage/surf. Not only have we nailed them, but this band has 10 friends and 367 plays--that means hurry up and like them before someone else does....that means it's not as cool...that means now. According to their awfully discreet internet life, it is believed that The Sunburns have only played one show...again, that is the word of the web. Their EP was released just a month ago; listen to it, love it, take your date to 'Look-out Point' to it...just don't pass out on a classic 13 minutes of rock and roll goodness.Check out their tunes on myspace or bandcamp....or on that nifty little bandcamp player (and for FREE), and listen to this contemporary rock-opera/anthem-etic EP during your everyday mediocre life...change it up a bit.
