COSMONAUTS - S/T 12'' LP and CASSETTE

I saw Cosmonauts while they were on a Burger Tour in the summer of 2010. They came through and played in a small art space with Cum Stain and Nobunny - unless Nobunny was some other time and it was some other time because they played with Cum Stain and Audacity that night. Anyhow, there was a bit of an issue with our PA system and the gang more or less played without vocals. Despite the setback, Cosmonauts thoroughly impressed and are now my favourite band. I put up a 7" release of theirs a couple years ago and recently found that they have most of their discography up on bandcamp (minus some limited release comps, an Italian released 7'', and any other pre-signed material). So, let's take a look at their self-titled.

They released it with Burger (BRGR049) on a limited run of 250 red cassettes. I was lucky to snag one because the cassettes are long gone by now, but they did re-release on vinyl a year later - several different versions. A few of us were lucky enough to get it on 'Easter Egg Yellow.' This self-titled is one hell of a first cassette. It's hard to pin-point tracks of interest on albums that are so solid, but if you are pressed for time (these are full length songs ladies and gents) then check out Neon Kids, Dorothy, and Yer So Rad. Actually, if you are pressed for time then wait. This album should be listened to in its entirety. Cosmonauts will gladly drag you through ups and downs of psychedelia - upbeat hip shakers, downbeat droning trance, eastern inspired instrumentals, and lazy nearly-inaudible vocals. There may be many ways to play music but they make rock and roll the way it should be made. If this album isn't something you can dig on, then don't come back to this blog because you don't belong here.

The four men of Cosmonauts are some hard working cats and are always on tour. Check out their facebook for dates because I am sure you can find them in your area soon enough. Also check out all their stuff on bandcamp. You'll need to do some extra clicking to buy things and it is worth it. Listen and love it.

SULTAN BATHERY - FIREWORX

So, this little release is a bit over a year old and we all know that if it is older than six months and younger than 20 years then it is no longer relevant. But that isn't going  to stop anyone from sharing it with you. Sultan Bathery is a groovy little three piece from Italy. These three gents seem to be making some splashes here and  there with interviews here and there and blog shout outs here and there and some facebook fans here and there and today we listen to the band's first EP, Fireworx - released in October of 2012. They have  since been touring throughout Europe and a quick  overview of the facebook doesn't say anything about  any US shows, but if you find something out that I  didn't bother taking the time to read (let's face it, google is for information and this blog is for  music) then please throw it in the comments.

The EP starts with the title track - a little ditty with beefy guitar tone, simple and effective drums, and the oooo and ahhh sort of vocal dissonance that so many of you listeners out there have grown to love since its popular re-emergence in the early 2000s. It is a great opener that will get your attention. The second track, 'River raw', does not stray far from the jangle and dance in the first track - the entire fucking EP follows suit. Fireworx dips its toes in a lot of seemingly 1950s inspired sort of western rock and roll on the berge of psychedelic breakthrough. And for the sake of not getting all meta with this and that - these are some good psychedelic garage tunes that are all under 2:30. Who can get enough of those short punch-you-in-the-mouth-songs?

You can snag the 7'' from Slovenly for 5.25 (I donated more than that - I just thought I would let you all know that because I take philanthropy lessons from Bono). Only con to ordering from Slovenly would be the occasional e-mail that I choose not to read and then have to take time to delete. Listen. Buy. Enjoy.

THE DANDELION - STRANGE CASE OF THE DANDELION

It's been too long since the last post and after a little facelift to the site and some time on the web I stumbled upon The Dandelion. The Dandelion, which may be the work of an individual musician, just released  'Strange Case of The Dandelion' a couple months ago. So right off the bat I think we can all see where this could be going - flower floating rhythms and fuzz'd vibes. To be honest, the intro to the opening track nearly had me going 'NEXT' (I'm not a fan of flute though I feel how a flute could add to make a rounded psychedelic sound) but I am glad I didn't. A few measures in when the song gets going it creates a layered nostalgia with simple bass and fuzz guitar lines on top of the unplugged sounds of acoustic guitar and flute. The songs moves on to live up to it's bandcamp tag 'paisley,' with hypnotic rhythms and ghostly vocals that fit together as timeless psychedelic puzzle pieces.

After paying more attention, turns out this six track bandcamp release is only a sample of a larger thirteen track album. I thought The Dandelion presented itself well through those six songs and there is no way one could go wrong with playing this album the next time a whole bunch of his/her quarter life hip kids came over to smoke cigarettes, snap phone photos (maybe one person will be cool enough to bring out a 35mm camera), drink, and do drugs. So, for five dollars and a few days patience, you could be prepared for that night - probably even before next weekend. Add 'Strange Case of The Dandelion' to your albums or at least dissect it for a mixtape.

THE SPYRALS - SUNFLOWER MICROPHONE 7''

The Spyrals are a talented garage/psych three piece from San Fransisco, California. As of tomorrow, November the 22nd, you will all be able to purchase their latest 7'' - Sunflower Microphone. The first track, also the title track, captures a great spirit of psychedelia and transports the audience to a trip on a desert wasteland, searching for any sign of life while kaleidoscope visions of the sky cause confusion and wonderment. It's damn easy to find yourself rolling your shoulders and hips to this surf influenced tune. The song is a great treat, and if you like it then please check out Night Beats or Bad Indians. The second song on this newly released 7'' is titled Long Road Out - it's damn easy to find yourself rolling your shoulders and hips to this five minute twangy and punchy story. Some may find it a bit jammy , though after a quick puff puff pass and the extended guitar lead turns into a small journey on a river made of goldfish, all reflecting the rays of the sun. If 60s inspired rock/psychedelic with a twist of surfin' blues is your thing, spend a mere six bucks and get this 7''. The first 100 copies are on yellow vinyl. Open your ears!

BAD INDIANS - NOT HAVING ANY FUN

Michigan's 4-piece, BAD INDIANS, put out another cassette earlier this summer, NOT HAVING ANY FUN. If you don't remember who they are, check out their other cassette HERE. This release is no less spectacular than anything this band has put out to date. Their ability to create great garage/psych rock and roll is consistent; they fail to disappoint. NOT HAVING ANY FUN is full of twists and shouts that will take you to an era when garage rock was it - one right after the other. If you ever find yourself at a BAD INDIANS show and you don't leave sweaty,  tired, and...let's throw in..smelling like beer, then you obviously have done something wrong. It's an awesome feel for the dwindling second half of the summer. If you have the cash, it's suggested that you buy the cassette, if you don't then you should just listen to this over and over because it'll make the band feel warmer inside...right there...yep...On another note, there is a FREE DOWNLOAD!

COSMONAUTS - BAD AFRO RECORDS 7"

Despite how COSMONAUTS are my (the first time I have made this blog personal) favourite band, I have yet to support you - the reader and listener - with any write-ups or leaks. Well, we aren't going to get into the leak factory just yet, because today is about a new release these guys are comin' out with under BAD AFRO. The title of the 7'' is still on the drawing board, but the tunes are available now! I saw this band of O.C boys come through my art-free and clean downtown just last summer - shortly after the release of their s/t cassette - and if i would have worn socks they would have been blown off.  After a stellar debut and an equally awesome follow-up, these gents are at it again! Side one of this little gem contains in its little grooves, Emerald Green. It starts off with a great little surf lick and then is quickly accompanied by the remaining members of the band to create an intro that builds great anticipation for a chilling and stomping anthem filled with a moving melody supported by strong back bones (the bass and drums, in case you didn't know) and haunted by, now familiar, distant reverb drown'd vocals.  The second track, Motorcyle One, is a great b-side. It compliments Emerald Green in the best fashion. Again, we the audio-audience will find our brains overloaded with fantastic psych/punk goodness. their song writing ability isn't that bad either. Composing songs for full bands isn't all that easy, and to create consistent sound within each album isn't any easier. Cosmonauts are making great progress in their musical careers, and hopefully we can all get the pleasure of seeing them in an art space or venue soon. For now, check out their newly acquired bandcamp (awesome points right there) and listen to their great music. Though, you won't find their full s/t up there...oh well. LISTEN TO THEM!..we'll get a leak later.

HIGH ARCTIC - MAN HAIR

With some howls and screeches, High Arctic makes there way to the blog. This three, sometimes four, piece from Canada slings around some psychedelic, artsy, chunky, slow, and heavy tracks. Their latest release, Man Hair, is pretty damn gnarly. The first handful of tracks are like a heavy rockabilly version of Kinski - a bit jammy with some stoner vocals - that might remind you of Isaac Brock - matched with wild noisy fuzz'd out guitar work (Our front-man, much like the lead for BLEACHEDBLONDE seems to be the bands noise machine; a great role in any band), and the occasional math-rock breakdown. The second half of the Man Hair falls a bit more into the ambient/noisy/experimental realm, has a cameo by an un-named clarinet, and ends with some droning acoustic work that will probably put you into some sort of trance, making you forget you were listening to music at all. They have a myspace, a facebook, a live video, and of course a bandcamp. Check them out on your favorite social network, look for them at an art space near you, and download their music....that's right...FOR FREE!

KRANG - SPEED OF TENT 7''

This may be a second too late, but here is a little something beautiful for your ears to munch on. Krang, a band with some guys from Canada (there's some good shit comin' from our friendly Northern neighbours), groove around on some spacey, transcendental, psych waves from a reality beyond your own. This psych four-some recently put out their first vinyl release on Mammoth Cave earlier this year - a cute little 7'' titled Speed of Tent. The record's first track, Speed of Tent, is a heavy droning force with fuzzed out bass, periodical screeching guitar handy work, and drowned vocals; it's like lighting up and dreaming underwater - a nice throwback without the circle of douche bags kicking around their boyfriend's scrotum filled with sand. The second track, Spirit Animal, begins with some clean guitar and tambourine making for a lighter introduction than the previous. Though, don't let that fool you into believing it's a light song because it eventually turns into a reel of voices of all the influential people in your life reverberating over the top of some waaaaah'd out riffs that are reminiscent of all the dark psych stoner bands you could ever think of.Check out Mammoth Cave  for this 7'', it is a must! And because there isn't an accessible leak.....let's make one! Remember, free music is great, but supporting the artists you dig is even greater. BUY IT.

WIDDERSHINS - WIDDERSHINS DEMO

Here is on that is unfortunately NOT FREE - not a good way to get your stuff out, is it? This band is called Widdershins but there isn't much more info besides taht they share that name with a handful of other artists. Regadless of how it ISN'T FREE, take a listen for a spacey grunge'd out travel to somewhere else, especially on a rainy day like today.  Wanderlust and Crystal Cave, the two tracks are completely instrumental and might hypnotize into an 80s arena rock, psychedelic, trance. At some point you may find yourself holding a lighter high in the sky pumping the other fist with long bleached hair and jean jacket, and at other points you will find yourself playing an early 90s racing video game on the Sega Genesis. Take a listen, but only here or on their bandcamp because THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO HAVE IT. (I'll get it to you soon, don't worry).

TEETH MOUNTAIN - TEETH MOUNTAIN

Teeth Mountain, ebery dentists dream - a collage of tribal-esque hypnotic noise. The song structures are bery loose, and possiby impossible to replicate libe, though as an auditory listening experience...excellent. To the unepected listenter, the first track will work you up for something powerful and awesome, and drop you off in a wonderland of psychedelia filled with sustained tones, pulsing shakes, improbed organic noise, bouts of ecstasy, and piles of haze. Yes, this album may just be a pretentious piece of art that doesn't deserve mention, but we'll let you listen to the half hour of mystic journey and find out for yourself. Again, no bandcamp...have a download!

DPT-001 BLEACHEDBLONDE - S/T

DPT-001  BLEACHEDBLONDE - S/T

BLEACHEDBLONDE, a three-piece from Colorado who are completely apathetic to accessibility, have put together a handful of noisy garage/psych/drone tracks and they are now available for you in a digital and physical format - physical release date is set for 05/01/11. Recorded in a sound-proofed garage and on a good ol' TASCAM, these three gentleman are a dark and haunting explosive and droning energy of peaked-out hi-end pulsing guitar riffs, lo-end fuzzed out bone shaking bass, and dampened nihilistic pounding drum rhythms. The lo-fi quality, intense instrumentation, and the delayed and distorted vocals ooze puddles of a raw and trashy power. DIE POP TAPES' first cassette is either going to make your ears bleed or give you a boner (if you are lucky, both). BUY THE CASSETTE, DOWNLOAD THE TRACKS FOR FREE, AND TURN IT UP.

RIVAL TRIBES

RIVAL TRIBES in 115 words or less:

Been listening to this band for a sec, but opted to not write about them on the account of the reoccurring native theme around here. RIVAL TRIBES, a three piece from 'Bermuda' (says the MySpace) are, in laymen's terms, pretty awesome. These gents combine elements of psych, math rock, and punk to form a loud orchestrated mess of goodness. Their little 6 song demo (downloaded as EP) is most definitely worth the name-your-price price, but don't be stingy. And no, they are not like Animal Collective or MGMT - fuck those bands in the ass. MTV does not dictate who owns 'sound'. Listen to and enjoy their up and down 6 track treble-y journey.

PS Check out the youtube video,  it actually looks like they put on a good show! Finally!

SON CATS - O'DELL / 1971 7''

The coasts have been pounding out more than stellar rock and roll for years, and will for years to come. And from both our coasts, and so many other places, come SON CATS. A two (sometimes three) piece from nearly every time zone in the US, Alex and Jasmine put all of the 'ooooooo's in groovy. These cats (no pun intended) put out thick rock and roll waves that drown your brain in a hazy maple flavored smoke.  The two tracks on this 7'', O'Dell and 1971, are packed with truck loads of pure energy. Without any post-production sort of static-magic, these two fill up a lot of  dead air with primitive skin-pounds, wailing guitar riffs, and genuine vocals. Combining folk, 60s psychedelic garage, and pure rock and roll - SON CATS piss excellence. Buy their 7'' from For Arbors / For Satellites or from their bandcamp, then check out the neat little animation/music video for O'Dell.

THE DRUG PURSE

The Drug Purse; definitely on drugs. This post-mod/art/psych four piece from Tacoma seize your mind and twist your gray matter onto a white paper stick and then serve you to children to be puked up later because the tilt-a-whirl was just too much whirl. These boys put together some grooving tunes that are definitely burn worthy - a blend of blues, garage and droney psych. Though it has been a few years since their first release, The Drug Purse EP, the band is still out and about accomplishing some thing; in fact, they made public a couple songs that will be put out on Wack Slacks Tapes. The site also says it's coming out soon. It's been about 6 months since that news was put out. How soon is soon? And unlike some of the other youtube footage on the blog, this one proves to be evidence that some bands DO move a little bit while they are on stage, but not enough to distract you from the necessary? obscure clothes the front man wears. We are hear and listening, no need to throw a tantrum.

Sorry, there is no promotional leak for this band...yet. For now check out their MySpace, last.fm and youtube videos.

NIGHT BEATS - H BOMB 7''

Saw this band was coming to a city nearby and if you happen to be in Boulder, CO this weekend, you should check out ASTROLAND on Saturday the 26th (Doing anything better on this Saturday night?) and let this band stroke your mind. Night Beats; from the pretentious and caffeinated Seattle, WA, have found a place here in this blog-- at the top of this page even. Scored their 7'' from a nifty little link (as should you, then you should buy the 7'') and though it's only four songs, duh...it's a 7'', it is definitely one to add to the collection.  H Bomb starts off with the title track and it's nearly perfect. To you, the audience who has yet to hear this band, beware; you may instantly have found your new favourite band. The first track displays what the rest of the others have--the perfect elements that you need for a spectacular psychedelic auditory experience: drenched vocals, a dripping reverb'd fuzz lead guitar, and moaning wails of a psychedelic dreamer. The only beef with this 7'', is that the third song They Came in Through the Window is remarkably similar to the title track, but don't hold it against them. This sort of thing is probably because they were looking for four of their best songs to showcase their talent, and two of the songs happen to be similar in song structure and progression, or maybe the the band is a one trick pony...with a pretty damn good trick.

SNEAKPEEK - S/T

SNEAKPEEK is yet another mysterious band that seems to have manifested it's music from the thin air. Sooo...you will find this post to be slightly different than others. Considering that this band only puts up single song releases, DPT has taken the liberty of buying half of them, getting the others for free, and compiling them together to create a sort of demo. We'll just S/T it. SNEAKPEEK, a two piece? girl grunge/psych/garage band, out of someplace where the English language is spoken, is new to the whole interweb game and not having a soundcloud, a MySpace, a Facebook, a Reverbnation, or contact info(besides the contact link on the bandcamp) is hindering the band. Though, they could just be sitting back and looking for blogs about them, then revealing their self like it's some sort of magic trick (kinda like paper - Endless Summer...but it wasn't magic). Going back to their first release, WAYTOOMUCH, in December of 2010, you will find that the song is a trashy fuck you song, or a love song--they are both the same. Drowned in an echoing slime, the slow trance beat of the song brings you in for the first solid two or three minutes, then the band moves into a bit of a drone realm and sends the song into extra innings and rails the same progression into your ears over and over again. A month later (at least that's what the bandcamp says) this two piece, like SO MANY other bands, released an additional track on New Years Day...how fucking trendy. This track, WESTERN SKY, shows some production progression in comparison to their first single release, and though we will leave it up to you to decide whether or not the fuzz is paralleled, the chorused gang vocals are a nice touch to the continued droned out tunes. Probably in a decision to bring more of a genuine feeling to the music, SNEAKPEEK put out a third song and recorded it LIVE. MELANCHOLY HEART (LIVE) shortens up a bit, but keeps the same off key dual vocal harmony as seen before and what is seen in the most current release WALK ALL OVER ME (LIVE). This last 2 minutes and 50 seconds gets a little heavier than the other songs and it's apparent that this lady fronted band is in the works of creating some Vivian Girls style rock and roll, and not just because they both happen to be girl bands, but because they are pretty alright music to listen to. Listen in mono if you can, and turn it waaay up!

DEAD FARMERS - GO HOME

Though this post finds itself nearly a year too late...In a fit of rock and roll rage, Dead Farmers-a three piece band from Australia, throw around crass upbeat tracks that are pieced together with driving psychedelic bass, sustained fuzzed-out guitar riffs, high energy drumming, and dampened gang vocals all layered to magically manifest aviators, sideburns and a 'stache on your face within seconds of hearing it. Dead Farmers put out like, as so many have written,  The Stooges (pre Iggy Pop) but crunchier, faster, and without out the pressures of poster-child-dom and money-hungry studio producers breathing down their neck; plus Dead Farmers sound better.

Apathetic to the idea of music that the Billboard's top charts brainwashes the public with, these groovin' dudes have painstakingly arranged 'Go Home,' 10 tracks of lo-fi art that times in at one song (two songs in their case) short of half an hour of pure arousal and is arguably a perfect set. The album starts with 'Can't Come', a familiar, yet completely foreign four chord progression that occasionally branches off into short bursts of trashy noise guitar that do not represent an inability to climax (as the songs title may suggest) but rather an everlasting feel good desire that aches to be long, rhythmic, and satisfyingly powerful. The pulse of the first 4 songs creates a frantic and polished sound that is distinguished by an emotion that can only be delivered simultaneously with the music; by years of failed attempts at assembling the correct combination of talent and dedication; by misunderstood appreciations for raw and dirty nights of striking out and having the lasting image of layers of stickers belonging to never-will-bees and has-beens, and 30-second permanent marker graffiti tags as your last memory before loosing your guts in the piss stained urinal at the shithole you just played at; by long nights in a small room sweating rivers of blood and sloppy chord transitions. The rest of the album falls in pace with the extraordinary introductory tracks, making 'Go Home' an album that belongs in all our collections. Unfortunately, for a band that has restraining orders against them (for reasons that you'll need to find yourself) their youtube video is not dressed to impress, the boys lack energy!!! Nonetheless, listen.

VOYAGEURS - NUDE VEGAS

VOYAGEURS; a three piece from Fayetteville, AR, are a current new crush. Having put out a few releases, all for FREE mind you, it's interesting to see the sort of lo-fi treasures this band is continually sharing with the world. Today we dive into their psychedelic space adventure titled NUDE VEGAS. This release starts, as though it seems, in mid song (thanks to a little post production magic) and though brash and crass, it slightly eases its audience into the pounding bass line and the noisy experimental guitar riffs. VOYAGEURS instantly bring a drugged-out psychedelic party to your brain, complete with hallucinations. Track after track; these three gentlemen lash out loud tunes that fit a mood/feeling that can be best described as a dreamy acceptance of the end of the world. Drowned-out in reverb and delicious feedback, this release will make anyone drool. How dangerous is it to create 7 tracks of epic livelihood and death slammed together like some sort of mutant created out of the green ooze from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II.....not very. Take yourself back a handful of decades and enjoy this band's celestial journey through your mind. After taking a look at their latest single-track release (ENVY IS INEVITABLE) and that green youtube video , it is sure that the direction this band is going is more than stellar.

DIRT EYES

Eyes seem to be a reoccurring theme, but in the interest of not giving a fuck...on to the next band. Sludgy like Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid' and bluesy like a contemporary favourite--The Black Keys--Dirt Eyes (not to be confused with LA's butt-rock enthusiasts Dirty Eyes) are an interesting drum and bass combo out of the glamorous Buffalo, New York. With an extraordinary amount of noise, Jono Benoit; bass and the barely audible screaming vocals; and Jordan Nittoli; the percussion, put out a stellar amount of sound that makes you feel warm, fuzzy, and somewhat.... sexy? Though, Dirt Eyes is not for light hearted easy listening/pop fans...actually, if you are keen on that scene, then I highly suggest their FREE 3track release 'You Are a Kind Magician, Indeed'; then maybe you'll learn to like real music. Dirt Eyes seems to be pretty elusive; one youtube vid and a bandcamp site. So, if you find yourself in the Buffalo area be on the look-out for a show of theirs. Their performance doesn't seem to rate too high on the energy scale (via the youtube video), but if you weren't such a stick in the mud you'd dance your little heart out to these groovin' psych/garage/doom tunes. You are now just a few clicks away from having new music.

EYES BEHIND

Eyes Behind, fronted by ex-Pussy Patrol's Marriette(no last name....go figure) and accompanied by drummer Zaza and keyboard-er Oliver, drag their grunge and psychedelic energy from track to track with catchy-minimalistic-fuzzed-out bass, tantalizing droned guitar riffs, and smashing drum beats. Searching through the cracks and crevices of the inter-web, Eyes Behind can be found on Heia Sun at Paris' Collectif Tralala--at least we are told it's from Paris; though, entirely beside the point-- and at good ol' Myspace. They aren't on last.fm...yet. Through the collective energies of MySpace and that cute bandcamp player to the left, the band only has seven audio samples on the internet. Check out the video, check out the tunes, and order their self-titled release through Heia Sun's e.mail, because it's the only way you're going to get this 10-track ear candy.
